Yin Yang Smoothie Bowl

When a friend of mine showed me pictures of the beautiful yin yang soup she made, I knew I had to try something similar myself. I was so impressed. I just love the kind of inspiration that won’t leave me alone until I start experimenting myself, first in my mind, then in the kitchen. This was definitely one of them. Instead of soup, I decided to make a yin yang smoothie bowl and, yes, it worked every single time. So – no magic involved! This time, I included a video to show you how easy it is. Oh, I almost forgot – it’s super delicious too!

Remember to soak cashews!

You will need:

  • a high speed blender
  • 3 – 4 medium size round serving bowls (mine are 5 inch/12 cm diameter on the bottom)

Ingredients (for 3 to 4 smoothie bowls):

For the yellow batch:

  • 2 cups ice cubes
  • 1/2 cup (70 g) raw, unsalted cashews, soaked overnight in sufficient filtered water or for at least 4 hours, drained
  • 3 ripe bananas, peeled
  • 1 orange or 4 clementines, peeled
  • about 6 pitted, dried dates (1.8 oz/50 g)
  • small piece of fresh ginger, rinsed (about 1/2 thumb size, or more if you like ginger)
  • 2 cups (230 g) frozen mango pieces

To add for the green batch:

  • 2 kale leaves, stems removed
  • 1 kiwi, peeled
  • 1 date

Garnish:

  • any fresh fruit of your choice, berries work best

Preparation:

Place all the yellow batch ingredients into your high speed blender and blend at high speed for about 1 minute or until very smooth. Use tamper to press everything towards the blades.

Pour a little bit more than half of the smoothie into a measuring cup. It should be around 2 1/2 cups (600 ml).

Leave the other half in the blender and add green batch ingredients. Blend at high speed for another 1/2 minute or until very smooth.

Depending on how many servings you want to make, you can either measure or estimate the amount you’re going to pour into each bowl. I just eyeballed it, and it worked fine.

Now comes the fun part which is also captured in the video: put one of the serving bowls right in front of you. Hold the container with the yellow smoothie in one hand, the container with the green smoothie in the other. Begin pouring approximately the same amount of each color into your bowl.

When you’re done pouring, it should look like this:

Take the bowl in both your hands and start to move it in a circular motion. I chose counter-clockwise to achieve an S in the center, but you can choose either direction. The result will look like this:

Here’s the video:

Take about 1/2 – 1 tsp yellow smoothie and place it as a dot into the center of the widest green area. Do the same  with the green dot in the yellow area. Here’s your yin yang!

Proceed in the same way with the remaining bowls, then garnish with fruit/berries of your choice. Enjoy!
